Ten Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions we hear most from people exploring a future in nail care. If you’re curious about becoming a manicurist, chances are the answers you’re looking for are right here.

1. How do I become a nail technician?

To become a nail technician in California, you complete a state-approved manicurist program, earn your required training hours, and apply for licensure through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. At RUBC, that path looks like this: enroll, complete 400 hours of hands-on nail training, finish the program, take the state board exam, then move forward toward licensure and professional work. It’s a clear, direct path from beginner to working nail professional.

2. Do you need a license to do nails?

Yes. In California, you must be licensed to legally perform nail services for pay. A license protects clients, ensures sanitation standards, and allows you to work in salons, spas, or independently. Nail school is not optional if you want to build a real career. It’s the foundation that keeps you compliant and employable.

3. How long does it take to become a nail tech?

Most manicurist programs take months, not years. RUBC’s Manicurist Program is 400 hours and can be completed in about three months for full-time students. That means you can move from training to career far faster than traditional college paths.

4. How much does nail school cost?

Nail school costs vary by program and location. At RUBC, tuition and program costs are transparent and structured so students know exactly what to expect. Admissions can walk you through the full breakdown, payment options, and any current scholarship opportunities so you can plan realistically.

5. Can you make good money as a nail technician?

Yes — many licensed nail technicians build strong, sustainable incomes. According to industry surveys, entry-level nail techs often earn $25,000–$35,000 per year, while more experienced technicians with a solid client base commonly make $40,000–$60,000+ annually. In busy markets or with regular clientele who book weekly or bi-weekly services, some experienced professionals report earnings above $70,000 per year.

Earnings vary based on location, skill level, hourly rates, tips, and whether you work in a salon, rent a booth, or operate independently. Because nail services are high-demand and recurring, strong customer relationships and consistent service quality can directly increase your income over time

6. What is a day in the life of a nail tech like?

A typical day involves preparing your station, working with multiple clients, performing services, maintaining sanitation, and managing time between appointments. It’s hands-on, social, creative, and fast-paced. Many nail technicians enjoy the balance of structure and creativity that comes with serving clients while building relationships.

7. Is being a nail tech a stable career?

Nail services are always in demand. People continue to invest in personal care regardless of trends. Stability comes from building skills, professionalism, and a loyal client base. With the right training and consistency, nail care can support long-term independence and growth.

8. Do I need to be good at art to do nails?

No! You do not need to be an artist before you start. Nail school is designed to teach technique, control, and design from the ground up. Creativity grows with practice. What matters more than natural talent is willingness to learn, patience, and consistency.

9. What supplies do nail techs need to start?

Professional nail technicians use tools such as files, brushes, clippers, sanitation products, and application systems. In school, you are trained using professional-grade equipment so you learn what real work feels like. Programs like us at RUBC provide all the tools and environment you need to build confidence before working on your own.

10. Is nail school better than learning on YouTube?

Online videos are helpful for inspiration, but they don’t provide licensure, supervision, or real-world accountability. Nail school gives you structured training, sanitation standards, live feedback, and legal eligibility to work. It turns information into professional skill and transforms interest into a career.
